Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes. This condition occurs in four types. Esotropia, commonly known as cross eyed, is a condition where both eyes turn inward. Exotropia, or wall eyed, is when the eyes turn outward. Hypertropia is an upward turn of the eye, while Hypotropia is a downward turn of the eye.
Strabismus usually appears in infants and young children, but older children and adults can also develop the condition. This condition involves the eye muscles and often occurs in people who have weak eye muscles or are extremely farsighted.
Strabismus is caused from family history, uncorrected farsightedness, or certain medical conditions such as down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
Treatment includes eyeglasses or contact lenses, prism lenses, vision therapy, and eye muscle surgery. Some patients only need corrective lenses to amend the problem, but others have more severe cases that require vision therapy, or surgery and vision therapy together.
